🇫🇷 FRANCEJacques Bodin
Jacques Bodin is a French painter and one of the prominent representatives of contemporary European hyperrealism. Living and working in Levallois-Perret near Paris, he has developed a distinctive visual language based on his own photographs, which he digitally reworks before transferring them onto canvas. His large-format oil paintings often require months of meticulous work.
Bodin focuses on seemingly ordinary subjects such as grass, fruits, hair, trees, vegetation, and still life. Frequently presented as extreme close-ups and illuminated with indirect light, these motifs become highly detailed studies of texture, colour, and perception. Yet his paintings extend beyond photographic accuracy. Meticulously rendered foregrounds are contrasted with blurred, diffuse backgrounds containing openings, abstract forms, or lines of perspective. This creates a fascinating tension between sharpness and ambiguity.
Approaching minimalism, Bodin’s work also has a conceptual dimension. The viewer is initially captivated by the precision of the image, before becoming aware of uncertainty and illusion. His paintings thus explore not only what we see, but also how we construct reality through perception.
